Dolphin-friendly tuna: we're worrying about the wrong species
نویسنده
چکیده
Seafood is increasingly marketed as the clean, healthy choice for consumers – full of good oils and proteins and low in fat – with canned tuna a favourite cheap source of healthy protein. But science provides everworsening reports on the state of many fisheries, and their effect on marine ecosystems. As international conservation negotiations flounder, consumers and industry are increasingly relying on ecolabelling to tell which seafood products come from sustainably managed fisheries. But there’s more to tuna than “dolphin-friendly”: what do these labels really tell us?

Examining dolphin hydrodynamics provides clues to calf-loss during tuna fishing
‘dolphin-friendly’ tuna knows that dolphins can be unintended victims of the tuna-fishing industry. Now, a mathematical model shows that dolphin calves can gain up to 90% of the energy required for swimming if they position themselves correctly relative to their mothers, but that the calves are in danger of being lost if this positioning breaks down [1]. As observations of dolphins in the wild ...
متن کاملSeabird Interactions with Dolphins and Tuna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific’
Bird flocks associated with dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific are described from observations obtained during eight cruises that took place from January to March of 1976, 1977, 1979, and 1980. In the northern tropical waters between latitudes 5”N and 30”N, 43% to 53% of bird flocks co-occurred with dolphins. In equatorial and southern subtropical waters between latitudes 5”N to 12”s and ...
متن کاملDuration of unassisted swimming activity for spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) calves: implications for mother-calf separation during tuna purse-seine sets
Size-related differences in power production and swim speed duration may contribute to the observed deficit of nursing calves in relation to lactating females killed in sets by tuna purse-seiners in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETP). Power production and swim-speed duration were estimated for northeastern spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata), the species (neonate through adult) most oft...
متن کاملEstimating common dolphin bycatch in the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores
Small-scale artisanal fisheries can have a significant negative impact in cetacean populations. Cetacean bycatch has been documented in the pole-and-line tuna fishery in the Azores with common dolphins being the species more frequently taken. Based on data collected by observers on ∼50% of vessels operating from 1998 to 2012, we investigate the influence of various environmental and fisheries-r...
متن کاملDolphin Habitats in the Eastern Tropical Pacific
Research-ship surveys by the Southwest Fisheries Center provided information on the distributions of spotted, spinner, striped, and common dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific. The main surveys were conducted from January to March during 1976,1977,1979, and 1980. 1\\'0 ships were used per survey, and together they overlapped most areas in the eastern Pacific where dolphins and yellowfin tun...
